REDBUD, EASTERN (Cercis canadensis) E-3,M-8

Dark-purple, zigzagged, slender twigs hold heart-shaped, glossy, dark-green leaves. The early spring flowers cover the leafless twigs and branches in small clusters of rosy-pink or magenta-colored, pea-shaped, half-inch long blossoms. The bark is thin, gray, smooth, but becomes scaly on old trunks. Height is 20-30’. Native: Eastern, central, and southwestern United States.

ROSE-OF-SHARON (Hibiscus syriacus) H-19,L-21

This medium to dark-green shrub or small tree grows from 8-12’ in height. The leaves emerge late in spring. It has beautiful, trumpet-shaped, single or double flowers from white to red or violet. The flowers appear on new growth in July through September. It produces a five-valved fruit capsule which is green and changes to brown and persists through winter. Native: China and India.
